Bartolome (Bartholomew)

Located to the east of Santiago Island facing Sullivan Bay. Bartolome is one of the youngest islands in the archipelago. It displays a fantastic landscape of lava formations. Pinnacle Rock, the worn away remnant of a cone composed of spewed ashy particles, is one of the best-known landmarks in the archipelago. Near the base of this tall, eroded pinnacle you can see multi-coloured fish and penguins.

Arriving at the top, walking distance takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes, you are treated to one of the great panoramic views in the Galapagos, you can see the varied volcanic formations of Bartolome and the immense black lava flows on the nearby island of Santiago. The resulting combination of moonlike landscape provides probably the most scenic panorama in the Galapagos Islands. The islands vary in color from a bright orange, to blacks and greens. The turquoise waters and white shores add to the incredible seen. Mangroves often hide mating sea turtles.
